About Hill's Morels

Hill’s Morel Mushrooms specializes in the sales of the freshest Midwestern yellow morel (sponge) mushrooms. For 25 years, our family has taken pride in providing high-quality, fresh morels to our customers, with top-notch sales and customer service.

Our goal is to deliver mushrooms to our customers within 12-48 hours of being picked in the wild. Morels picked in the evening are in the air at 5 am or in a delivery truck at 1 am on a regular daily basis!

We are certified and licensed by the State of Minnesota and follow food handling required practices. All of our products are organic, grown in the wild, and picked by hundreds of “hunters” around the Midwest.

There is much mystique surrounding the art of finding or “hunting” wild morels, which is why we can’t tell you exactly where they come from—we don’t know! Our pickers keep their favorite spots a secret from even us!

Looking Forward to another fun, exciting and enjoyable season, seeing old faces, hearing new stories and getting caught up in that familar Morel Fever!

Good Luck to All, happy pickings!

Where's the Shrooms?

Tell Tale Signs that the Mushroom Season is Here

While we buy morels throughout the Midwest, we buy the bulk of our mushrooms in Minnesota and Wisconsin. We are headquartered in picturesque La Crescent, MN, right along the Mississippi River. Morel season in this area begins around April 30, depending on weather conditions.

For nature to grow morels, 50+ degree nights with 70+ degree days and some recent precipitation is usually required. They usually appear 7-10 days after the first dandelion sighting!

Hill’s Morel Mushrooms Tell-Tell Signs of Impending Morel Season

Nancy Hill’s easiest, most accurate and most used sign is DANDELIONS! We have NEVER been proven wrong for the past two decades.

You may find some small grey morels, but you never find the mother lode without:

- Full yellow dandelions in yards. Yellow dandelions next to buildings (which are hot spots) do not qualify. After one yellow blossom in an open space the season will begin to arrive in 7 to 14 days!

- In fact, it takes white headed dandelions for an abundance of morels to appear.

Remember there are always exceptions to the rule but this is our big indicator. Mother Nature is not easily predictable. Other indicators that have been used with good justification is:

- Lilacs nearing blooming

- Cottonwood trees have greening of leaves

- Elm tree leaves are the size of your pinky finger

- Red bud trees in bloom

- Apple trees in blossom

- The 4th mowing of your lawn

- Dogwoods in bloom

- Turtles crossing the road

- Snakes out of hibernation
